DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Peel
A reporting series on the prevalence of domestic violence and the shortage of crisis accommodation for women and children escaping abuse in WA’s Peel region.
My reporting found more than 140 victim-survivors had been turned away from the region’s only crisis facility in just six months. The WA Government had promised a second women’s refuge in the region, but it was yet to be delivered.
I covered the scourge of family violence in the courts, spoke with victims, frontline workers, police and advocates about what happened when there was nowhere safe to go and the increasing pressure on services.
I continued covering the issue and the push for a second refuge. The WA Government confirmed the new refuge and brought the project forward.
